If You Want Something Done Right, Just Do it Yourself!

Writer: Robyn FrankRobyn Frank

Just a note: I’ve never DIY’d a single thing in my entire life, but watching other people take something mundane and turn it into something unique or more useful is so entertaining! I love living vicariously through these creative and resourceful DIY’ers!

One of my favorite DIY creators is Rachel Metz. I've been following her for years and her work always astonishes me! She’s a hardworking, one-woman show who is NOT afraid to roll up her sleeves and use some power tools. I admire the fact that she encourages other women to do the same. Rachel doesn’t shy away from new and challenging DIYs, and she’s all about keeping it real on her channel, so when (not if) a project goes wrong, she’s sure to include that part of the process in her videos. She understands that making mistakes is a valuable teaching tool, and that kind of wisdom is such a great way to approach life. What is life anyway but a giant DIY project? On occasion, she also makes DIYs for her beautiful bulldog, Callie.

Kristen McGowan is another fantastic do-it-yourself-er! Her content revolves around home décor, lifestyle, and DIY tips and tricks. She discusses her inspiration for projects and her design process in such a personal way that I feel like I’m talking to a close friend whenever I watch her videos. Kristen has a keen eye for detail and I always find myself inspired when I see the before and after shots of the spaces she designs. Lately, she has been posting videos about DIY-ing her parents’ home– from updating bathrooms and bedrooms to refreshing stairwells! Those are my favorite videos of hers, as her parent’s reactions during the grand reveal are so heartwarming.

A DIY duo that I love is Mr. Kate! If you haven’t already heard of them, Kate and her partner, Joey, transform indoor and outdoor spaces for YouTube creators. Their passion for re-styling rooms for the people they care about is evident in everything they do. Kate and Joey’s videos are more long-form than the others featured on this list, but I enjoy seeing the entire transformation process from beginning to end. Their videos have such high production value that they’re more akin to a show you might find on HGTV than the indie-produced content you might typically find on YouTube. Nevertheless, I had to include them on this list because they are talented and passionate about transforming spaces for others!

This next creator duo isn’t a DIY channel, but I find myself returning to their content time and time again! I have been following Elsa Rhae for many years, and have watched her channel grow and change. In the beginning, her content revolved around murals, body painting, makeup, and other forms of art! She now is living a life of “essentialism” with her partner, Barron, in a 13-foot Scamp trailer with their dog, Kamp. They took their life on the road and share their journey on their YouTube channel.

One of my favorite videos features Elsa and Barron learning to hunt for morel mushrooms in the wild with friends. The most appealing aspect of Elsa’s channel is that they’re always looking to learn new things from friends or strangers that they meet during their travels. Their experiences are both motivating and informative to watch! On the production end, Elsa and Barron strive to make professional and polished videos with stunning cinematography and crisp editing.

Their videos take me away from my day-to-day troubles for a few moments and their nomadic lifestyle gives them a meaningful perspective on life which is reflected in their content. They also have a website and a podcast wherein they answer frequently-asked questions about their minimalist lifestyle! I find that they always have eloquent and unique discussions. I could go on forever about how cool these two creators are!
